I’ve started work on a rolling project from the Christ’s Hospital Museum. It’s a stack of bills from 1677 which have spent a good portion of their life in a chimney. As you would expect it’s filthy and the edges of the leaves are dog-eared and brittle. I don’t think it’s ever been looked at since the 17th century, so all I will do to it is dry clean each page with a smoke sponge and soft brush, reorganise them into some kind of order (some of the sheets are numbered) and then rehouse them in a wrapper and then into a box for safekeeping.
